The latest Government figures show a 2.5% (4,800) increase in the number of abortions performed in 2007. The statistics also showed that there was significant increase in the number of abortions performed on girls under 16. This announcement comes as amendments are being tabled to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology bill which would permit abortions to be carried out on demand by nurses as well as doctors.
LIFE spokeswoman Michaela Aston said, “Everyone agrees that there are far too many abortions and will be alarmed at yet another increase. This contributes to our country’s growing reputation as the abortion capital of Europe. The figures, though tragic, are unsurprising because women are encouraged by the government to regard abortion as a lifestyle choice which carries no consequences. The reality is that every abortion takes the life of a baby which is the reason why so many women experience pain and regret.
At LIFE we counsel women every day who regret their abortions and suffer as a result. We know from our experience that most women feel they have no choice. By continuing to make abortion quick and easy, the government has closed its eyes and ears to the reality of abortion and the real needs of vulnerable women. Politicians like Dr Evan Harris MP, who seek abortion on demand, are deaf to the demands of the public and dismissive of the suffering of so many.
What is particularly tragic is the rise in the number of children under 14 having abortions. Condom rich and value free sex education, promoted for so long by this government, is the cause of and not the solution to this problem. Young people want to and are capable of saving sex so deserve to be encouraged and told the truth that they are only safe by saying no.
If we are ever to see a reduction in the numbers of abortions being carried out, a radical change of policy is needed. Only when our society responds in a more positive way to crisis pregnancy by meeting the need for counselling, housing and practical support, as LIFE continues to do, will there be more lives saved and fewer damaged women.
