Leading UK pro-life charity LIFE, is today calling upon the medical establishment and the government to face up to the fact that abortion is a leading cause of breast cancer.
LIFE spokeswoman Nuala Scarisbrick says: ‘Today the Government’s Director of cancer services is saying that efforts need to be directed at promoting early diagnosis of cancer. And while this is undoubtedly the case, a key factor behind the UK’s soaring breast cancer rate is our high abortion rate.
‘As usual, the same causes of breast cancer are trotted out – obesity, alcohol and other ‘lifestyle’ factors. But abortion can never be mentioned, despite overwhelming evidence that it is a leading cause of the disease.
‘The reasons for the ABC link are twofold. First, full-term pregnancy protects against breast cancer, so abortion deprives women of that protection. Secondly, oestrogen levels soar in early pregnancy causing a fast proliferation of cells in the breast. When that pregnancy is prematurely ended by abortion, those cells are very vulnerable to cancer.
‘Women have a right to know the truth; the medical establishment has a duty to tell them. When the ABC link is finally accepted there will be uproar – women will demand to know why they were blamed for soaring breast cancer rates (by drinking and eating too much/not exercising/smoking etc, etc) when actually the breast cancer epidemic is in large part the fault of doctors themselves.
‘Abortion is a multi-million pound industry, promoted ruthlessly as women’s hard-won right. But we are urging even hard-line pro-choicers to re-think their stance on abortion and to investigate the facts. All other considerations aside, when the truth emerges things will have to change.’
