Phil takes on Sahara for pregnancy-care charity LIFE

- 151 miles across a desert in the toughest race on earth

Leeds adventurer, Phil Marshall, is taking on the Marathon des Sables - a gruelling 151-mile race run over six days across the Sahara Desert.  Dubbed “the toughest footrace on earth”, Phil is taking on the challenge to raise money for four charities, including pregnancy-care charity LIFE.

‘Competitors run over sand dunes, uneven rocks and stone in soaring temperatures that can reach 150º F whilst carrying all their own supplies in a rucksack on their back,' says Phil.  ‘The event is equivalent to running 5½ regular marathons.

‘Finishing the race is not a foregone conclusion, with some years up to 20% of the runners dropping out before the finish.  Mental stamina is as key as physical strength, with competitors expected to reach speeds up to 14km per hour.'

The race, which begins on 1 April, has meant that Phil has had to pull out all the stops in training.  ‘It's one of the biggest challenges I've ever faced, but it will be worth it to help LIFE's work,' explains Phil.

National charity LIFE exists to save lives and transform the futures of some of the most disadvantaged children and young people in the UK by supporting vulnerable pregnant mothers and young families through difficult times.  LIFE provides the emotional and practical support they need to turn their lives around.
