Lord Alton's questions reveal worrying statistics
Over 150 animal-human hybrids have been made in secret in the UK for the past three years. Information provided in parliament in response to a question by Lord Alton also showed that for every baby born by IVF thirty embryos are destroyed.
Prof Jack Scarisbrick, LIFE National Chairman, says: ‘Without Lord Alton's questions these genuinely frightening facts would still be a secret, and we thank him for raising these issues and drawing the public's attention to them.
‘Scientists' claims that their work on animal-human hybrids will result in cures for illnesses simply do not stack up. As Lord Alton says, the only successful cures have come from adult stem cells and not embryonic ones. One has to question, therefore, why the scientific community continues with this research and why they have tried to keep it under wraps.
‘We are calling for a halt to work involving embryonic stem cells. On moral grounds as well as medical ones, it makes more sense to focus on adult stem cells in the search for cures for debilitating illness.
‘As regards the destruction of hundreds of thousands of human embryos over the last 20 years, while no one wishes to deny the happiness IVF babies bring to their parents, we cannot regard this as a price worth paying. Human beings, at any stage of development, cannot be used as spare parts.
‘There are other alternatives to IVF. As well as IVF's questionable ethics, its success rate is low and it fails to treat the causes of infertility. The LIFE FertilityCare Programme, which is now responsible for the birth of over 100 babies to parents who have often been told they'd never have children, is ethically sound and restores health to the couple so they can conceive naturally.
‘We mustn't become complacent and just sit back, allowing what most people find unacceptable to continue. We welcome Lord Alton's action and thank him for bringing these issues out into the open.'
