Renewed attempts to Legalise Abortion in Ireland

In recent months, the Irish Republic has been the target of a deliberate and sustained campaign by abortion advocates trying to overturn the country's ban on abortion.

The issue will be pushed to the fore tomorrow as a bill is presented to the Dail seeking the legalisation of abortion where the pregnancy poses a risk to the mother's  life. One could understand a straight case where, as a last resort, medical intervention becomes necessary to save a mother's life. The intention would be to save lives, not to end a life, as in abortion. However the abortion advocates in Ireland have been shrewd is asking that the possibility of Suicide be included as a risk to the mother's life.  It is a clever attempt to legalise abortion on the grounds of mental health.  It does not require much imagination to see how any condition that allows abortion on the grounds of mental health will be open to abuse. Indeed the Irish decision makers need only to look across to England to find hard evidence of this.  Nine out of ten of the 200,000 abortions done in England and Wales every year fall under Ground C which relates to the continuation of the pregnancy posing a risk to the physical and mental health of the woman.

One of the bill's proponents declares that Abortion is a human right and should be allowed. How can there be a human right which ends the life of a human being?

While upholding respect for the value of the unborn child, Ireland has focused its attention on improving maternal healthcare for women to the extent that today it holds the proud world record for the best maternal healthcare for women.

Legalising abortion in Ireland would be a retrograde step which plays into the hands of the abortion industry which understandably wishes to expand its business into new markets.  Ireland should protect its reputation for acting in the interest of women and reject the industry outright.
