Drugs
Any drugs may affect you or the development of your baby- this includes illegal or street drugs. Always tell your doctor you are pregnant if you are prescribed medication. If you buy any medication at a chemist, ask the pharmacist if itÕs okay to take that product in pregnancy. Always check the label.
- Cocaine, crack, heroin, amphetamines and cannabis are known to affect a baby directly and indirectly. Crack and cocaine are especially dangerous, as they have an immediate effect on the baby's blood supply. Babies of drug-dependent mothers are born dependent themselves, and suffer from withdrawal symptoms at birth.
- If you are taking drugs and pregnant please see your GP for guidance. Your midwife or health visitor can put you in touch with support services.
